JIFFY LUBE MIAMI 300
POST-RACE NOTES
Part 2
MARK MARTIN (No. 60
Winn-Dixie Ford) "Well the car was real loose with the last set of tires and it was
real good on the long runs. Jimmy's car kinda faded. But we weren't really that good on
that last run. We were struggled the whole way and Jimmy's car faded pretty good. But, I
had to contend with Jeff Burton and that was just too much for me there. We had to do too
much with to little time right at the end. I slipped going into three and I just couldn't
keep it down on the bottom. The car was so loose and Jeff was up under me. It got pretty
exciting. That's kinda how you like to see races end, but you like to be the winner. Jeff
did a great job, he came from way behind. He was running well at the end. It was a good
race for us. Great race track. I am looking forward to coming down here next year and
running a double header.
"I was pitiful. I should have wrecked 50
times. We tried real hard to win the race but, I am glad Jeff won it. He did a great job.
Spencer's car kinda faded. My car was terrible loose on that last set of tires. I don't
what was wrong. They never hooked up right. I am going right now to have my surgery. I'm
out of here. I'm not going to waste any more time. I've been waiting since May to get this
done. The season is finally over."
Regarding Dale Earnhardt Jr. "He is
awesome, he is pretty incredible. I have to be careful what I say not to offend anyone,
but, he just might be better than his dad."
JEFF BURTON (No. 9 Track Gear Ford) "Well
the 60 car was very difficult to get by, but he was loose. But I tell you, he was driving
his but off. I said it a lot, he is the best driver in Winston Cup racing. This is Busch
racing. He is one of the best drivers in the world. He stayed in front of me longer than
anybody else could of, as loose as he was. I mean he was loose. I couldn't get by him.
Finally going into three he got real loose and did a good job to save it. I got under him
and got by him. I thought if I could get close enough to Jimmy I could take some air off
of him and get him looser than he already was. He was real loose. That's basically what
happened. I got on the apron and I was actually above him and went across him. And when I
went across him it took air off his spoiler. I got on the apron and got up under him. The
lapped traffic hurt him a lot. With out the lapped traffic we would have never had caught
him. That was the big difference."
MIKE SWAIM, JR. (No. 28 Pennzoil Pontiac)
"The crew informed me over the radio that we won that race. NASCAR black flagged the
90. I suppose he and the 16 (David Hutto) got together on the front straightaway. I saw
the 16 spin. I can't point any fingers or name any names because I didn't really see how
or who made the initial contact. So you know that's
NASCAR's call and they always have the final decision. So we will just have to go
with it.
"Well that was a good restart. The 16 and
90 were dicing it up pretty good and my car had gotten tight after the start of the race.
I had a great car to start the race. The Pennzoil Pontiac was real fast. We were just
riding. So I figured we would have a lot for 'em. The car tightened up so much toward the
end of the race. I was doing everything I could to stay on their back bumper. The
guys did a good job and worked hard and deserve the win. Even though maybe we were more
lucky than more fast today. But they still deserve it."
ROBERT HUFFMAN (No. 90 White House Apple Juice
Pontiac) "He's taking home the money, but we're taking home the pride. I felt like we
won the race. The penalty put a damper on the day, but not on winning the
championship." |
